“A precise diagnosis is vital for families because it guides the best treatment choices and offers a clearer picture of the future. Furthermore, correct labeling is the key to better research. Unless we distinguish these children from typical myositis cases, we cannot effectively study the biology behind their disease.”
Background :
Dr Laura Scagnellato is a rheumatologist and PhD student visiting from Italy to work with the JDCBS team at UCL and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
She is currently studying children and young people whose Juvenile Myositis does not fit neatly into one box. Their condition often looks a lot like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Scleroderma, or Mixed Connective Tissue Disease.
My research focuses on these ‘overlap’ cases to give every child the most accurate diagnostic label possible.
